Buhari To Investigate Arms Bought By GEJ
Following the release of images of arms bought by former president Goodluck Jonathan the incumbent leader Muhammadu Buhari is set to investigate contracts involving the purchase of weapons.
The description behind the tank T72 is written on Russian, so arms bought under Jonathan government are reportedly not in Nigeria.
Garba Shehu, presidential media aide, revealed this in Channels Television programme on August 9, Sunday.
Shehu said the president was interested in taking stock of every naira that left the national treasury and for what purpose.
The presidential spokesperson said: “The President is interested in every penny that leaves the Nigeria’s treasury.
“As you are aware, records are being checked right now, not only in the oil sector, but also in the various departments of government.
“So, Mr. President is really interested in what has happened to the equipment that have supposedly been bought and supplied, some of which might be there on the ground or might not be.
“Only a thorough audit will actually reveal this. The disclosure has been made about substandard (equipment) in the Nigeria’s fight against Boko Haram.”
Shehu repeated President Buhari’s will to immediately stop the activities of the deadly Boko Haram sect.
The presidential spokesperson stated that there is currently no territory under the control of the insurgents.
“The insurgents have been degraded. They are in disarray without a central command and coordination,” he announced.
Shehu said Buhari would not send soldiers to the front line without ensuring that they are appropriately equipped and taken care of.
“Just on Friday, at the National Defence College, Mr. President was committing himself to the fact that our military will be well taken care of in terms of their welfare, in terms of their equipment and in terms of the motivation they need to confront these insurgents.
“We are already beginning to see the fruits of this because as we speak right now, Boko Haram is in disarray.
“And what we are witnessing now; that is, occasional bombings and suicide attacks, characterize only one thing globally. And that is that, the dying days of the insurgency. It’s just a matter of time, we’ll get there,” he said.
Shehu spoke a few days after Alex Badeh, former Chief of Defence Staff, said he led an army that was ill-equipped.
Sambo Dasuki, former National Security Adviser, had also said while some arms and equipment bought by the Jonathan’s government were used to fight insurgency during the latter days of his tenure, some others were still being awaited.
INEC: Zakari’s Appointment Illegal, Dangerous to Nigeria’s Electoral System –Fayose
The Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, on Sunday criticised the appointment of Amina Zakari as Acting Chairperson of the Independent National Electoral Commission and warned that the nation’s electoral system may be heading for the rocks.
He said the appointment was illegal and contravened relevant sections of the Constitution which established the INEC.
Speaking through his Special Assistant on Public Communication, Lere Olayinka, on Sunday, Mr. Fayose said the appointment of Ms. Zakari, who is rumoured to be President Muhammadu’s Buhari’s in-law, contravened the provision of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended).
“The most honourable thing for President Buhari to do is to rescind the unlawful appointment of Mrs Zakari as INEC Acting Chairperson,” the governor said.
“Since Mrs Zakari’s tenure as INEC National Electoral Commissioner has expired, she cannot continue to preside legally on INEC affairs, except if duly appointed as substantive Chairman of the commission as provided in Section 154 (1) and (3) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).
“One of the major legacies bequeathed to Nigeria by the immediate past Peoples Democratic Party government was free, fair and credible electoral process and President Buhari, who is a beneficiary of this legacy must sustain it by ensuring that the impartiality of the electoral umpire is unblemished by suspicion of partisanship and illegal appointments.”
He argued that respected former lawmaker and former top civil servant, Tanko Yakassai, had revealed that he knew Ms. Zakari since childhood, and that her late father, the former Emir of Kazaure, married President Buhari’s elder sister.
“Alhaji Yakassai went on to reveal that President Buhari lived with and spent a significant part of his early years in the home of Amina Zakari’s father,” Mr. Fayose noted.
“This is enough establishment of conviviality between Mrs. Zakari and President Buhari, whose party, the All Progressives Congress (APC) will be standing elections with other political parties this year and this will no doubt cast credibility aspersion on any election conducted by INEC headed by Mrs Zakari.”
He further argued that Section 153 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), which established INEC and other Federal Executive Bodies did not make any provision for the appointment of Acting Chairman.
Mr. Fayose declared Ms. Zakari’s appointment illegal, saying that Section 154 (3) provided that the President shall consult the Council of State in exercising his powers to appoint a person as the chairman of INEC. According to him, there is no record of such consultation before the appointment of Mrs Zakari as INEC ‘Acting Chairperson.’
“The only requisite condition for Mrs Zakari to be acting as the chairman of INEC is that she must be a National Electoral Commissioner and her tenure as National Electoral Commissioner ended on July 21, 2015,” Mr. Fayose submitted.
“As at today, there are four National Electoral Commissioners in INEC instead of 12. They are Abdukadir Sulaimanu Oniyangi, Mohammad Ahmad Wali, Chris Iyimoga and Lawrence Nwuruku.
“If anyone should act as INEC chairman, it should be any of the remaining four National Electoral Commissioners, not someone whose tenure has expired”.
Buhari blasts Akpabio, others, says corrupt APC, PDP members must face trial
President Muhammadu Buhari has reacted to claims by the 49-member Senate Caucus of the Peoples Democratic Party which on Thursday kicked against the current administration’s war against corruption, claiming it was selective and lacked transparency and fairness.
In a statement Sunday night, Mr. Buhari described the claims by the Godwill Akpabio-led caucus as “false, baseless and totally unjustifiable”.
Mr. Akpabio and his colleagues had at a press conference in Abuja Thursday alleged that the administration’s anti-graft war was mainly targeted at opposition politicians.
“The [PDP] caucus is not happy with the current trend that seems to suggest that the war against corruption is selective and targeted at PDP stalwarts and states,” the group said at the briefing.
“The current war lacks transparency, fairness to all and appears to be aimed at political adversaries.”
But in a statement via his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, on Sunday, Mr. Buhari said it was regrettable that “wild allegation of bias and partisanship” could come from respected and distinguished members of the Nigerian Senate.
Mr. Buhari said, “We have noted with regret, the allegation by members of the PDP Senate Caucus that the present administration is being selective and partisan in its prosecution of the war against corruption.
“We state without equivocation that the allegation is false, baseless and totally unjustifiable.
“For the avoidance of any doubt whatsoever, we affirm that having made his zero tolerance for corruption clear to all and sundry, President Muhammadu Buhari does not micro-manage or interfere in the daily work of Nigeria’s anti-corruption agencies.
“The wild allegation of bias and partisanship in the fight against corruption shouldn’t have come therefore from respected and distinguished members of the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
“That claim belongs to the past and not the present. Public officials and other leaders accused of corruption by relevant agencies should plead their innocence, not malice.
“President Buhari’s unwavering stance is that whosoever is charged with corruption should face the law irrespective of whether they are members of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), or any other political party.
“As far as the President is concerned, corruption has no political party, no religion and no ethnic group.
“It is important to remind the PDP Senate Caucus and all Nigerians that right from 2003 when he started campaigning for the Presidency of Nigeria, President Buhari consistently promised to do his best to curb corruption in the country.
“The President remains wholly committed to fulfilling that promise and will not be deterred from the relentless prosecution of the war against corruption because he remains convinced that, as he has said, “unless Nigeria kills corruption, corruption will kill Nigeria”.
The President also dismissed the claim by the caucus that he and his party were meddling in the ongoing cases at election tribunals and using the State Security Service to harass electoral officials believed to have sympathy for the PDP.
“The claim by the PDP Senate caucus that President Buhari and his administration are meddling in election petition cases through the Department of State Services (DSS) is also untrue,” Mr. Buhari said.
“The duties of the DSS and other security agencies are clearly spelt out in the laws establishing them. The Federal Government led by President Buhari does not give them instructions regarding their daily operations.
“Election Tribunals and the Independent National Electoral Commission in Rivers, Abia and Akwa-Ibom States do not operate under the guidance of the President.
“Any individual or group of individuals who think that their legitimate political and civil rights are infringed upon by the DSS or any institution is advised to seek protection and redress under our constitution and laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria instead of resorting to baseless allegations against the Buhari Administration.
“On President Buhari’s watch, the rule of law, not impunity, shall govern every aspect of life in Nigeria and there will be no room for sentiments, bias and corruption in the application of the laws of the land.
“President Buhari also wishes to re-assure all Nigerians that his administration will not discriminate against individuals or groups in the performance of its duties and that favours or patronage will not be dispensed on the basis of votes.
“The President remains committed to his Oath of Office and the letters and spirit of the constitution.
“He calls on all Nigerians to join hands with him in the fight against insecurity, corruption and impunity in Nigeria so that we can have a country that will prosper for the benefit of all of its citizens and future generations of Nigerians.
RRS Busted Three(3) Kingpins of In-Traffic Robbers In Mile 2 And Ijora
As part of the efforts of Lagos state governor Akinwunmi Ambode to rid Lagos State of heinous activities of hoodlums and armed robbers, the state Police Command, Rapid Response Squad, (RRS), has apprehended two suspected armed robbery suspects at National Art Theatre, Ijora olopa, surulere at about 22:50hrs on the July 31, 2015.
The RRS mobile team were informed by an unknown victims in two separate cars that armed robbers had attacked and robbed them at Ijora - Olopa, and the team moved immediately to the crime scene where the suspects were nabbed.
The two suspects Murtala Saka, 22, and Bashiru Muibi, 26 years has been charged to court with immediate effect.
In the same vein, the mobile team of the rapid response squad in the state, has also recorded another achievement through the arrest of member of notorious syndicate who allegedly terrorised the Mile 2 area of the metropolis.

PDP Alleges Oshiomhole Is Suffering From Diarrhoea Of The Mouth After $6B Comment
Following reports that US State Department has denied telling Governor Adams Oshiomhole about a minister in former President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration absconding with the sum of $6 billion, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo state has alleged that the governor is suffering from diarrhoea of the mouth.
It was gathered that the United States Department in Washington-DC, denied the story, asking Oshiomhole, to name the official who made such a statement to him.
Reacting shortly after the US States Department’s statement, Dr. Emmanuel Agbo, the chairman of conference of PDP state chairmen, wondered why Oshiomhole at his level would be engaged in making careless and baseless utterances all in a bid to unnecessarily demonize the Jonathan administration and those that worked under him, Daily post reports.
According to Agbo, Oshiomohle’s comments is, however, not surprising because the APC has always been known for nothing else other than propaganda.
Agbo said: “We view statements of 6 billion dollars theft credited to Adams Oshiomhole as very unfortunate as leaders at his level shouldn’t be suffering from diarrhoea of the mouth.
“It is unfortunate that what we have in the hierarchy of the APC are irresponsible and politically irreverent talkatives and propagandists. That it takes America and American officials to reveal such monumental theft and it was unknown to the APC government until the American trip clearly shows the ineptitude of the APC government.”
It would be recalled that since President Buhari was sworn in on May 29, Oshiomhole has been fierce about President Buhari anti-corruption programme.
He has been on a running battle with Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, ex-minister of finance, who he blamed for withdrawing $2 billion from government accounts for Jonathan’s reelection campaign.
Just recently, he hinted that Department of Petroleum Resource (DPR) may have collected about N30 billion illegally by deducting cost of revenues at the source from federal government ministries and agencies.
Teenager’s Manhood Goes Missing After Shaking Stranger
Residents of Lambata in Gurara local government area of Niger state were yesterday stunned after a 17-year old boy, Suleiman Usman claimed his manhood had vanished after he shook a stranger.
According to New Telegraph, the police have arrested two persons in connection to the incidence. A witness, Mohammed Tsado, said the victim told him that one of the suspects alighted from a car and asked him to shake him but he refused.
After which the suspect insisted on the handshake while asking him if he was a Muslim. After accepting the handshake, Usman realised that his penis had vanished and immediately raised an alarm which attracted other people in the vicinity.
Another witness, Zakari Mohammed, said the suspects ran into their car and sped off but they were accosted by vigilantes at Muye who had been tipped off earlier.
Angry youths in the area were said to have pounced on the suspects and made attempts to lynch them, save for the intervention of the police, who rescued the men and took them to the police station.
The suspects were then asked to restore Usman’s penis, after which the teenager was taken to a commercial sex worker to check if his manhood was still functioning. Although he confirmed his penis was back, he however said he could not ‘perform’ with it.
Reacting to the incidence, the Niger state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Bala Elkana, “the angry youths did not allow the police to do their job. I can assure you that we are on top of the matter and we will ensure the case is handled amicably.”
Meanwhile, a 30-year-old man, Segun Omoto, was arrested and charged before the Ejigbo magistrate court for stealing his own daughter, aged four.
Shell To Sack 6000 Workers
Due to the falling price of oil in the world, Shell has decided to cut down about 6000 employees from its workforce.
Leadership reports that the oil company also sold 33 per cent of its stake in the Showa Shell refinery in Japan to Idemitsu, for about $1.4 billion.
The reduction of its employees is expected to see the company reduce its staff strength from 100,00 workers and contractors to less than 93000.
The Chief Executive Officer Ben van Beurden said it was important to observe what was going on in the oil market and make decisions based on the observation.

7 Die In Cross River Auto Crash
At least seven people have been confirmed dead in a ghastly motor accident involving a truck and a transport bus belonging to Calculux Company.
This was confirmed by the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) in a report made available to the News Agency of Nigeria.
It was gathered that the accident occurred at New-Netim community near Odukpani local government area of Cross River on July 29, 2015.
Addressing news men on the incident, Lawrence Ikechukwu, Cross River sector commander of the FRSC, said the bus with 14 passengers was heading to Port Harcourt from Calabar.
He said: “The 14-seater bus belonging to Calculux Company with registration numberLSR-813xS (Lagos), was heading to Port Harcourt from Calabar and it was carrying 14 passengers including the driver.
“The bus driver was on the right hand side of the road and the truck driver was over taking dangerously and carelessly.
“The driver of the Calculux bus tried to avoid the truck and ran into the bush but thetruck lost control and followed them into the bush; crushed the bus and seven people died.
“Seven other persons are currently receiving treatment at the Calabar General hospital and a few of them are under critical condition.
“From every indication, the driver of the truck is at fault because he was over-taking dangerously and he lost control.”
According to the sector commander, the driver of the truck ran away shortly after the accident.
“We are working with the police to arrest the driver of the truck; we will get him and he will face the law.
“We have the manifest of the bus with us and we are working hard to contact the loved ones of those that lost their lives,’’ he said (NAN)

Former leaders of the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) have hailed President Muhammadu Buhari for the appointment of retired Brig.-Gen. Paul Boroh, as the coordinator, Amnesty Programme and special adviser on Niger Delta to the president.
Reacting to the appointment on Wednesday, July 29, the ex-MEND leaders, under the aegis of the Leadership, Peace, and Cultural Development Initiative (LPCDI), said though the appointment was delayed, it is welcomed and commendable, Sahara Reporters reports.
“We welcomed the news of the appointment with happiness. It is more gratifying to know that the new appointee is from the region and from Bayelsa State,” the ex-MEND leaders said.
They added that the appointment would resolve the concern raised by the people of the Niger Delta region over the hitches in the amnesty program and payment of outstanding allowances and scholarship fees.
In his reaction, the spokesman of Ijaw Youths Council (IYC), Mr Eric Omare, who spoke to NAN, commended the president for responding to the plight of the Niger Delta people.
According to him, it goes to show that present administration was sensitive to the aspirations of the region.
He therefore called on Boroh to take steps in ensuring the outstanding tuition fees and allowances of beneficiaries, especially those studying abroad are paid.
Also speaking, the Niger Delta Coordinator of Artisan Fishermen Association of Nigeria, Rev. Samuel Ayadi applauded Boroh’s appointment.
He called on him to look into the problems of the Niger Delta region, especially the many pending oil spill compensations.
President Muhammadu Buhari was commended for appointing on Tuesday Brigadier-General Paul T. Boroh (rtd.) as the Coordinator of the Amnesty Programme for former Niger Delta militants.
The former coordinator of the amnesty programme, Kingsley Kuku, also commended the president for appointing Boroh as his successor.
On learning of the new appointment, Kuku,who spoke from his hospital in America described Boroh as a seasoned administrator and soldier, for the post, hailing the president for not entrusting the office in the hands of a politician.
Since Buhari took over power on May 29, the Niger Delta people have been calling on him to look into their plight. The ex-militants, who study abroad under the scholarship programme of the federal government amnesty initiative, had lamented their unpaid allowances and called on the government to address the problem.
Chief Edwin Clark had also urged the president to take the Niger-Delta amnesty programme seriously as it has a way of affecting the nation.
Alleged Forgery: Court Rejects Petition To Stop Ekweremadu’s Probe
A Federal High Court in Abuja has refused to stop the police from its investigation on Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu and others over an alleged forgery of the 2015 Senate Standing Rules, The Nation reports.
In a ruling yesterday, July 27, Justice Gabriel Kolawole, declined an ex-parte application filed by Senator Gilbert Emeka Nnaji, which he sought to restrain the police from making public the report of the inquiry.
Acting on a petition by Senator Sulaiman Hunkuyi of the All Progressives Congress, Kaduna state, the police had on July 6 interrogated Ekweremadu and Maikasuwa over an alleged forgery of the standing orders.
The petition alleged that some parts of the 2015 Senate Orders were different from the one ratified by the 6th Senate in 2010, which was used by the 7th Senate, as Standing Orders 2011.
The Police, on the strength of the petition, had subsequently interrogated the leadership of the 7th Senate, including former Senate President David Mark, his deputy (now Saraki’s deputy), Ike Ekweremadu, former Senate leader Victor Ndoma-Egba, and Senator Ita Enang, the former chairman, Senate Committee on Rules and Business.
The Clerk to the National Assembly, Maikasuwa, who is the custodian of the Senate Standing Order was also invited for questioning by the police.
Senator Nnaji before the hearing yesterday, had sought interim orders to restrain the defendants in the case pending the determination of his substantive suit, while the petitioner is challenging the constitutionality of the investigation within the context of the doctrine of separation of power.
However, Justice Kolawole said he could not grant the request sought by the plaintiff at ex-parte stage when his court possesses the power to conduct a judicial review of the action complained about in the substantive suit.
He refused the plaintiff’s request to shorten the time within which the defendants could respond saying the court’s rules allow defendants 30 days within which to respond.
According to him, a reduction in the period must be with the agreement of parties in the suit.
He ordered the defendants to appear on the next day and show cause why he should not grant the request sought by the plaintiff in his ex-parte application.
Justice Kolawole adjourned to August 4 for the defendants to show cause.
Meanwhile, President Muhammadu Buhari has been briefed by the police on their probe into the forged Standing Order of the Senate.
STRIKE: Government Offices Shuts Down
On Monday, July 27, 2015, all government offices in Imo state were shut down, following the industrial action ordered by the leadership of the labour unions operating within the state.
The upset workers down tools over the planned slashing of their monthly wages and allowances by the state government.
According to Vanguard News, the labour leaders warned that they would be constrained to transform the five days intended warning strike into an indefinite strike, if government fails to pay their salaries.
The state government in a press statement signed by the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, CPS, Mr. Sam Onwuemeodo, described the 5-day warning strike as uncalled for and is not justifiable.
He disclosed that, “The five-day warning strike is uncalled for. It is not justifiable especially when it is on record that the Rescue Mission Government in the state had never owed workers before now”.
Adding that, the agreement government entered with labour leaders was that where the bailout fund was not sufficient.
He added, “It is against the backdrop of these agreements that the state government feels disappointed with the 5-day warning strike, which the workers in the state have embarked upon now because the truth of the matter is that the bailout fund has not come. We had earlier made such clarification and the situation is still like that”.
However, the CPS reasoned that the labour leaders would have done their investigation to see whether the government was saying the truth or not, with the issue of the bailout fund.
Also, investigations revealed that members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, NURTW, also joined the strike on sympathy ground.
Buhari vaccinates grandchild, says Nigeria committed to eradicating polio
President Muhammadu Buhari declared Saturday in Abuja that his Administration will do all within its powers to ensure that no Nigerian child is ever infected with polio again.
Speaking at a brief event in the Presidential Villa to mark Nigeria’s successful completion of one year without any reported case of the wild polio virus, President Buhari pledged that the Federal Government will mobilize and deploy all necessary resources to efficiently complete the task of eradicating polio from the country.
“Today, 25th of July, 2015, Nigeria has successfully completed one year without any case reported of the wild polio virus,” Femi Adesina, his spokesperson, quoted President Buhari as saying.
“Achieving this feat has placed us firmly on the path to eradicating this paralyzing disease from our land.
“I seize this opportunity to call on Governors, our traditional and religious leaders, the private sector and our mothers and fathers to redouble their efforts to ensure that every child and every new born baby is vaccinated with the polio vaccine and other life saving routine vaccines,” President Buhari said.
The President personally vaccinated one of his grandchildren against polio at the occasion to demonstrate his commitment to eradicating the virus from Nigeria as well as the safety and efficacy of the polio vaccine.
President Buhari thanked all Nigerians and foreign partners who have supported the country’s polio eradication programme in several ways.
He said he looked forward to the formal declaration of Nigeria as a polio-free country in 2017.
